Personal Growth and Motivation

The old cliche about being "my own worst enemy" has more than a little truth to it.  While we all have to face obstacles that are outside our control, often the hardest struggle is the one we fight within ourselves.  Many times our sense of being "stuck" is much more than just a problem of low motivation or uncertainty about what to do.  Psychodynamic therapy views such difficulties as symptoms of a deeper conflict, often related to frustration, fear, or self-doubt.  These feelings can become particularly intense when we find ourselves in situations where we don't believe we are able to live up to our full potential or meet our own expectations.  In my experience effective therapy is seldom about "motivating" someone by telling them what they should do or how to think.  Rather, it's more often about helping them find ways to uncover the passion and drive to achieve that's already there.
